June 21st is International Yoga Day

Updated: Jul 19, 2024

In 2014, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the establishment of "International Yoga Day" at the United Nations General Assembly, emphasizing the benefits of yoga for physical and mental health, and pointed out that yoga is an ancient traditional Indian sport with the potential to promote global well-being. The United Nations General Assembly passed this resolution on December 11, 2014, declaring June 21 of each year as International Yoga Day. This resolution has received widespread support from 175 member states, setting one of the records of the largest number of countries supporting a UN resolution. The reason behind the selection of June 21 is also very interesting, because this day is the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere, the longest day of the year, and symbolizes "light and wisdom" in Indian culture.
